Basal Metabolic Rate

  * Rate at which the body uses calories to maintain body function when at rest --- correlates closely with rate of body growth
  * Very rapid growth may result in insufficient energy left for strenuous activity --- tires easily



Development of the Eye

  * Visual maturity reached between 6 to 7 years of age
  * Slight growth during adolescence with increased frequency of near-sightedness
  * Only one-third of children who need visual correction identified during pre-school years
